Introduction: Welcome to this week's episode of Church on the Rock-Nashville Sermon Podcast! We are thrilled to have guest speaker David Markham from Truth Infusion Ministries with us today. David brings a powerful message on the concept of gratitude, a topic he has been deeply moved to share.

Key Points:

  1. Finding 1st Thessalonians:

    • David opens by directing the congregation to 1st Thessalonians 5:18, emphasizing the importance of giving thanks in all circumstances as it is the will of God in Christ Jesus.
  2. Gratitude Beyond Devotion:

    • David shares his journey of seeking God's message and how the concept of gratitude repeatedly resonated with him. He highlights that biblical gratitude goes beyond a mere feeling and is an active expression of recognizing God's grace.
  3. Biblical Definition of Gratitude:

    • The Greek word for gratitude, "eukarysteō," combines "well done" and "charis" (grace), meaning acknowledging that God's grace works well. Unlike the English definition, which often sees gratitude as a feeling, the biblical definition is an action.
  4. Gratitude as an Action:

    • David stresses that gratitude in the Bible is always a verb—an action that must be expressed outwardly, not just felt inwardly.

Examples of Biblical Gratitude:

  1. The Forgiven Sinner (Luke 7:36-50):

    • A woman, labeled as a sinner, demonstrates profound gratitude by anointing Jesus' feet with fragrant oil despite knowing the judgment she would face. This act of gratitude, even in the face of personal embarrassment, challenges us to express our thankfulness regardless of others' opinions.
  2. The Cleansed Leper (Luke 17:12-19):

    • Out of ten lepers healed by Jesus, only one returns to express gratitude before claiming the benefits of his healing. This teaches us the importance of prioritizing thankfulness to God before seeking the rewards of His blessings.
  3. Jesus as the Perfect Example:

    • Jesus exemplifies gratitude in three key instances:
      • Feeding the 5,000 (John 6:11): Jesus gives thanks before distributing the loaves and fishes.
      • Raising Lazarus (John 11:41): Jesus thanks the Father before performing the miracle.
      • Last Supper (Matthew 26:27): Jesus gives thanks before breaking the bread and sharing the cup.

Takeaway: David concludes by urging the congregation to move beyond passive gratitude and actively express thankfulness in their daily lives. He reminds us that recognizing and proclaiming God's grace is a crucial part of our faith journey.
